Poorly Installed Gutters :

The gutters are know as a common cause of water intrusion in Florida. As it rains, water enters through the windows causing more damage as it penetrates the interior of the home, often times this issue goes unnoticed. If the leaks aren’t addressed immediately, there are greater chances of damage to the structure of your home.

The rain gutters can be made of different materials and cover the full width of the window, either with a single piece or with several. When the problem is the rain gutter, a very common mistake is that it only reaches up with the vertical sash that delimits the window opening. Since the ideal is for the rain gutter to be longer and fit inside the façade. So that in this way, the water that slides down the vertical could not seep into the junction of the flashing with the façade.

These platforms are placed in the lower part of the window, on the outside and have a certain inclination so that the rain runs off naturally without penetrating the façade. It is important to keep in mind that  the exterior face of the gutter must be at a lower elevation than the interior, until a minimum slope of 10 degrees is reached.

The function of the gutter is to lead the rainwater as far as possible from the façade until it is discharged. Despite this, some people fall into the mistake of placing a flashing that is too short and even placed flush with the façade,  will likely experience direct pouring on the façade.

Weather:

As the cold season begins, homeowners may notice that windows leak when it rains. Moreover,  many realize spotting in the walls or around the windows and flooring . Wall discoloration and spotting often an indicates that there is water damage. If possible, anticipate that these problems will get worse when the weather worsens if not treated.

Windows are exposed every year to all inclement weather, so it is normal that over time they deteriorate. And as a consequence, some drops get to penetrate the frame and cause the wood to rot .

Window frames:

Although there are many types of window frames, the most common are those made of wood and aluminum. In both cases, its important to realize that different care is required to avoid water seeping through the window.

When water is filters through window frames, note that wet wood provides the great environment for microbial growth development and most of the times it has to be replaced.
