5 Different Types of Mold That Can Be Found in Your Home

Mold comes in a variety of hues, including black, white, green and orange. Here are 5 of the most common types and where they are likely to be found. Fungus that can grow on organic matter and spread nearly anywhere.

1. Aspergillus

Aspergillus grows in damp spaces such as showers and under sinks with leaky pipes. Sometimes it grows on carpets that have been damp for a while. However, it can also grow in areas with minimal humidity. It can be found outdoors as well as indoors and spreads easily. It can cause allergy symptoms and the development of asthma. Older people, children, people with breathing problems, and those with immunosuppression.

2. Cladosporium

Cladosporium grows on wooden and woven surfaces, such as carpets. It can also be found outdoors, where it grows primarily on plant material. It usually enters the home through HVAC systems or simply through open windows or doors. Cladosporium can cause skin and nail problems, as well as respiratory problems. It can cause any common breathing problems related to mold, but also upper respiratory infections, allergic reactions, itchy eyes, coughing, sneezing, and a runny nose.

3. Penicillium

Penicillium is one of the most common types of mold, usually found on carpets, wallpaper, rotten favor’s, etc. It is easily from one transmitted frplace to another.  This is the substance from which the antibiotic penicillin is made; However, medicinal use does not mean that it is harmless.

4. Mucor

Mucor has a very distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other molds. It appears in thick, grayish growths that are often found on air conditioning systems and ductwork.

Mucor is a common problem in water-damaged buildings.  Diseases like zygomycosis, also known as mucormycosis can be caused by this type of mold.  This is a serious fungal infection heralded by fever, headaches, sinus pain, abdominal pain, and respiratory problems. If you suspect this infection, seek medical treatment immediately as it can be fatal.

5. Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys chartarum is a greenish-black mold. It can grow on material with a high cellulose content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, and paper. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth. Commonly referred to as  “black mold,” Stachybotrys is one of the most dangerous types of mold you may find in your home. It is also one of the worst side effects of water damage, and can cause flu-like symptoms and even be fatal for pets, children, elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
